Fourth Grade

The Bronxville Elementary School staff welcomes your child to Fourth Grade. Fourth grade is a period of significant growth in both independence and academic ability. Fourth graders are often curious and eager to learn, and are developing critical thinking skills that allow them to understand more complex ideas and perspectives. A fourth grader is often beginning to question "why" and "how" more deeply. They're developing the ability to analyze information, understand cause and effect, and form their own opinions. Their curiosity extends beyond surface-level facts, prompting them to explore concepts with increasing independence and a desire for deeper understanding. Socially, fourth graders are refining their friendships, navigating group dynamics, and becoming more aware of the world around them. While still valuing adult guidance, they're increasingly keen on establishing their place within their peer group and understanding diverse social perspectives. They possess a growing sense of responsibility and enjoy engaging in projects that allow them to explore their interests.

Within fourth grade there are programs, such as the How to Unmake a Bully residency and multiple service learning opportunities, to make sure that the students work on their ability to recognize that they are part of a larger school community.

Fourth graders become members of the grade level band or orchestra and learn that their individual “instrument sound” helps to create one “voice” as the members perform together.

Fourth Graders Bring Science Lessons to Life at New York Botanical Garden

Fourth grade students from Bronxville Elementary School stepped beyond the classrooms for hands-on learning at the New York Botanical Garden. As part of their visit, the students participated in an engaging program centered on plant adaptations and the water cycle. They explored the conservatory, where they identified how plants adapt to survive in a range of environments.

In Adele Hoffman’s fourth grade orchestra classes, the young musicians are developing technique and teamwork. During a recent lesson, the students practiced proper holding positions, aimed to produce a clear, resonant sound while plucking the strings.
