First Grade

Welcome! We believe that learning in the First Grade is a continuum of  the use of interactive, hands-on activities and patient practice.

First graders begin to move from magical thinking to logical, rational mental processing and are eager to understand principles behind “why things truly are the way they are”. The program emphasizes the acquisition of skills necessary to facilitate learning in all curriculum areas. It also fosters competency in completing tasks, thus fostering development of a positive self-image. We would like you to know more about the program and how you, as parents, can work with school personnel to help your child make the most of his/her school experience.

Mindfulness Lesson Teaches Emotional Expression and Self-Regulation

Second graders quietly sat at their seats, using pencils to draw pictures that reflected moments when they felt mindful. The activity was part of a mindfulness lesson within the school’s Community, Awareness, Responsibility and Empathy (C.A.R.E.) program, led by school psychologist Dr. Joyce Vastola.
